the vineyard horse riding

Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a very special commissioned watercolour different-kind-of portrait for a lovely family of five. As an artist, it’s always exciting to capture the essence of each family member, along with their passions, in a unique and meaningful way. This particular piece was a joy to create, blending warm, pastel tones with a heartwarming family dynamic and their shared love for wine-making and horse riding.

The mother and twin girls are the stars of this portrait, wearing flowing summer dresses with delicate lavender floral prints. Their soft, feminine attire captures the warmth and closeness of the family, set against the beautiful lavender hues that give the painting a soothing yet vibrant feel. Each girl has her own unique energy, yet the bond between them and their mother is clear, creating a sense of harmony and joy in the composition. The father, dressed in casual but well-coordinated attire, adds a grounded and relaxed presence to the piece. Meanwhile, the youngest (and maybe the coolest) family member, the baby boy, is the embodiment of happiness—his bright, joyful expression radiates from the painting. His playful personality brings a sense of lightheartedness and fun to the entire family portrait.

The backdrop of the portrait tells just as much of the family’s story as the people themselves. The sprawling vineyard hints at their passion for wine-making, while the graceful horses in the background symbolize their love for polo matches and horse racing. The blend of these elements speaks to the family’s lifestyle and interests that make them such a close-knit group. Colour also played a vital role in bringing this piece to life. The soft pastels, especially purple, tie the whole portrait together, evoking a sense of warmth and intimacy.

Creating this watercolour portrait allowed me to explore the beauty of capturing a family’s story through both visual details and deeper emotional connections. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that this painting will forever represent the passions and love shared by this family. I hope it brings them as much joy as it brought me while I painted it!
