lumealuiniculae - custom dj headphone case
Well, hello again, everyone. It's mid-February, and this is my first post of the year. Can you believe it? I can. If you've been here with me enough, you probably do too. But let's dive in, shall we?
Let me ask you this: What do you get when you mix a love for music and food, an adorable dog, and an undying passion for video games? A DJ, of course! But in this case (pun intended), you also get the most personalised, hand-painted headphones case ever. I was commissioned to customise a headphone case for a DJ with a personality as colourful as his music library. The goal? Capture everything that made him HIM—music, radio, his beloved dog, food (because food is life of course), video games, sports, and everything retro, like a mini-biography in illustrated form.
Before I could start slinging paint, I needed a game plan. So I pulled out my trusty iPad and started sketching. It's just easier to adjust the composition and move things around to make everything fit before I put it under the "pen and paper". Only this time, the surface was a very textured textile, so of course, more prep work needed to be done. And let me tell you, prepping a surface is like warming up before a workout—skip it, and you’ll regret it. Cleaning, priming (6 layers of ground, prime colour with a drying time), making sure the paint would actually stick and not look bumpy—it was all part of the gruelling process. But once the groundwork was set, it was time to bring the design to life! I used a mix of paint and acrylic markers, layering shapes, adding details, and making sure every tiny element stood out. Once the artwork was done, the final step was sealing it to ensure durability. Because what’s the point of a killer custom case if it doesn’t survive life on the road?
After many hours of meticulous painting (and a few existential crises), the case was done. It wasn’t just a protective shell for headphones anymore—it was a piece of art, a reflection of the DJ’s world, a tiny but mighty explosion of personality.
Personalized pieces tell a story. They bring old or tired-looking everyday objects back to life. And most importantly, they make people smile (or in this case, vibe).
